Varsity puts students in a quandary

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, May 4: A large section of external students of University of Pune have complained of non-receipt of admission tickets for the post-graduate examinations beginning next week bringing to light the inconvenience caused to students by the external department of the varsity.

The post-graduate exams for arts and commerce streams are beginning next week. Thousands of students appear externally for these exams ever year. The students complained that right from paying the examination fees up to receiving the hall ticket, they have to face the callousness of the external department.

According to the rules, the students confirm their admissions by paying their fees in July - August. They have to pay the final admission fee in October - November. The work of dispatching the hall tickets to the students is supposed to begin shortly after receiving their exam fees. However, a large number of students have still not got their tickets with just one week for the exams.

``We have contacted the external department but the officials have failed to provide any satisfactory explanation. Now, instead of studying we are frequenting the varsity struggling with the administration lapses,'' said an affected student.

Although the students who submit their fees in cash and have a proof of cash receipt challan, those who pay the same by cheque or pay order are the ones who are severely affected by the delay. They are left with no other option but to do the rounds of the varsity. "The external department fetches over Rs one crore through receipt of various fees but lacks sorely in providing prompt and efficient services to the students' community, " students alleged.
