Police officer dismissed for underworld nexus

MUMBAI, MAY 4: Mumbai police commissioner R H Mendonca has dismissed former senior police inspector of the crime branch, Prabhakar Babar, from police service for his alleged nexus with the underworld.

Babar was arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officers last year accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000 from the owner of Hotel Krishna in Fort. According to the ACB report, Babar had been a regular at the bar and never paid the bills for his drinks.

At times when Babar got drunk, he also disturbed other customers at the bar. The complaint said that Babar had demanded Rs one lakh from the bar owner, Dharmesh Puri. Babar had threatened Puri that if he failed to fulfil his demand then either Babar will himself kill him in police encounter or tip off the gangsters to shoot down the bar owner.

Tired and terrified of Babar's threats, Puri approached the ACB. The officers then asked him to negotiate with Babar and they planned a trap. It was agreed that Puri will pay him Rs 50,000. Babar was caught red handedwhile accepting the bribe through his frontman at the bar.

Following Babar's arrest by the ACB, the police commissioner had transferred him to the mofussil region of the state and later at Bhandara. However, Babar did not report to the duty and made efforts to get his transfer cancelleds transfer. Babar made every effort to stay in the city at any posting, but he could not succeed.

In the meanwhile, the ACB had collected more facts and dug out Babar's shady background. As per the procedure the ACB submitted their detailed report to the competent authority which in this case was Mendonca. Using his prerogative as the police chief, Mendonca dismissed Babar under article 311 B of the Indian constitution.The dismissal was approved by the state director general of police, (DGP), Arvind Inamdar.

Before taking charge as the senior police inspector of unit-I, crime branch, Babar had served as the incharge of arms and ammunition department at the police headquarters. Babar also did postings at the M R A Margpolice station, airport security, special branch.

According to the senior police officers, it is the first such dismissal of a senior police officer for his nexus with the gangsters.
