As summer vacations draw closer, various hobby classes all over the city are back again. These especially are a major attraction for those who don't intend to go for a vacation. Back to school, these workshops at the summer schools promise fun and guarantee to beat the serious atmosphere of school. The Nehru Bhawan, run by the Durga Das Foundation, offers two such programmes that will start on May 24 and will be conducted every morning from ten to one.
As the name suggests, Flying colours is specially designed to teach arts and crafts to four and five year olds. Story telling classes to develop an interest in reading at this impressionable age also promise to be interesting, to say the least.
For children in the age group of 6 to 14, a theatre workshop has been organised. It will be conducted by Lushan Dubey and Bubbles Sabarwal, who run Kid's World in Delhi and have productions at par with international ones.
This theatre workshop will begin at 11 and conclude at 5 everyday. It will ultimately climax into a production titled, Jungle Book Se Aage.
There are 50 places for the Flying Colours programme and 75 for the theatre workshop. Registration starts on May 6, `99 and is on first come first serve basis as there is a mad rush for these. The fee for Flying Colours will be Rs.1500 and the theatre workshop Rs. 2000. Both these programmes commence on the 24th. Flying Colours finishes on June 19, while the latter finishes on June 14, `99.
According to Atul Khanna, Director, Durga Das Foundation, which runs these courses, ``this summer school will be the grandest ever because of the theatre workshop. What we need is qualitative programmes and a good variety, so that we can give children the best.''
For children and youngsters who are interested in dance, the Pracheen Kala Kendra offers an ideal opportunity to learn Kathak. According to the secretary, M.L.Koser, ``the Kathak classes will be conducted by Pandit Tej Prakash Tulsi, an internationally acclaimed performer. Kathak classes will be conducted every morning from half past nine till one, for 15 days and will end with a dance performance.
There is enough opportunity for everyone to get into theatre as the Pracheen Kala Kendra offers a month of classes which begin on the 24th of this month. Rajesh and Manisha, with another accomplice from Bombay will cultivate this talent, for 4 to 14 year olds. These classes have been going for the past four years.
Other than these two classes, they also have painting, yoga and personality development classes everyday from 9.30 to 1 p.m. The Bal Bhawan, another organisation where summer classes are conducted, has not yet decided what they plan to do this summer. Ashiaana, a school whose classes have been very appreciated does not have any plans for this summer either. The Principal, Lalita Prakash, a science enthusiast would organise science fairs for the children to create an interest in science.
Lalita says: ``at this age you feel that if the holidays are on, let's relax and do other things.'' She is thinking about organising naturopathy classes for children, but it is only a thought.
For children who are not culturally inclined, there are computer classes all over town, that they can get into to develop interest. If sport gets them going, then the CLTA has tennis clinics on a first come first serve basis according to merit and demand. The golf club also has summer camps from time to time, and can be inquired about.
