Bajaj Auto taking steps to meet emission norms

Dev Chatterjee
MUMBAI, MAY 6: Chairman of Rs 3,500 crore Bajaj Auto, Rahul Bajaj claimed that his company's two-three wheelers will meet all the emission norms of the country for the year 2000 which are one of the most stringent in the world for the automobile industry. ``All the products of Bajaj Auto will meet emission norms prescribed by the government of India beyond April 2000... we have taken all the steps,'' he said here today.

A recent Supreme Court judgement has bought the emission norms issue on the fore as all the new cars which are not meeting the Euro II emission norms are being banned for registration in the national capital region of New Delhi.

``We, as a corporate, taking many steps to emerge as an environmentally - friendly green company,'' he thundered. Bajaj's comments came in the wake of a government notification which asked all the automobile companies to advertise whether their products are meeting emission for April 2000 norms or not.

Emphasising the need for a balance between growth andenvironmentalism, Bajaj said in order to reduce pollution to zero levels, ``human beings will have to go back to cave ages''. ``There is an acute need for sustainable and balanced development... Indian corporates must adopt clean and green technologies and initiate environmental audits,'' said he.

``Just the way Indian companies have adopted ISO 9001 quality certifications, they should now go for ISO 14000 standards for environment protection. We should create an awareness among Indian corporates and citizens about the global environmental issues,'' said he.

Saying that Bajaj Auto will sell more than a million units of two-three wheelers even in the current fiscal, Bajaj said that the company is expecting another good year for the two-three wheeler industry.
