Tandon warns city rickshaws

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, May 6: Additional Police Commissioner M.K. Tandon has warned autorickshaws of strict action if they are found `encroaching' at local bus-stops, even as he asked State Transport bus drivers to properly maintain their vehicles to check vehicular pollution.

Following a seminar organised to guide ST bus drivers operating in the city, the police has decided to implement several measures. Accordingly, bus drivers should stop only within the designated area at ST depots. They are also to note down registration numbers of autorickshaws parked in their stoppage areas, along with place and date.

The information would be submitted to the ST authorities for sending to the traffic police. The details would be computerised and action initiated against erring autorickshaw drivers. Action would also be taken for hanging out from buses, according to an official statement issued here on Thursday.

With a view to checking pollution due to emissions from ST buses, drivers have been asked to properly maintain their vehicles by getting them regularly examined and serviced. As an incentive, the traffic police would award special certificates to those ST drivers who contribute to checking vehicular pollution.

The awards would be given on the basis of their performance for six months. The ST drivers even agreed to ensure that as the first step all buses from the Panigate Bus Depot would be made pollution-free by regular maintenance, the statement claimed.
