Mahajan for winding up Prasar Bharati

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, MAY 10: Information and Broadcasting Minister Pramod Mahajan is in favour of winding up Prasar Bharati on grounds that the Government cannot lose its control at a time when there are so many other television channels airing programmes.

Mahajan says the proposal for granting autonomy to Doordarshan had come when it was the only television channel available to Indian viewers. But it has no relevance anyomore, when viewers can choose from so many channels.

``My intention is to wind up Prasar Bharati. If I could, I would explain to all political parties that it was wrong to constitute Prasar Bharati in the first place,'' he said in an interview on the Ru-Ba-Ru programme on Zee India TV, being telecast tomorrow night.

``If you say the Government will lose its only channel and be unable to air its views, I don't think that's right'', he said. It was not proper for five or six people to have a hold over Prasar Bharati and Parliament or the Government have no hold over it, headded.
