PUNE, MAY 10: The Congress will win the mid-term Lok Sabha elections, asserted senior party leader and Congress Working Committee (CWC) member Arjun Singh on Monday. The victory, Singh added, would ``silence'' those who were holding him responsible for guiding Congress president Sonia Gandhi to form the government at the fall of Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition.Talking with press persons, Singh evaded a direct reply on whether he was being made a scapegoat for the party's failure to form the government even after staking claim.
Asked why the Congress had failed to form the government, he said, ``People like Mulayam Singh Yadav and Surjeet Singh, who promised to give us support, backed out at the last moment leaving the party in no position to form the government''.
``I have heard about the allegations against me by my critics. But I will not reply to them now though I can. They will get the answer when the party emerges victorious in the polls...All I will say now is that my loyalty is with theparty president Sonia Gandhi,'' he added.
Asked from which constituency he would contest the election, Singh said, ``I will definitely contest the elections, but the constituency will be decided by the high command''.
Asked whether the Congress had failed to form the government because the party had not consulted the senior Congressman Sharad Pawar in formulating strategies, Singh Shot back, ``You should ask this question to Pawar. Why are you asking me? I can only speak for myself''.
He expressed confidence that the people would vote for the Congress because it was the only party which was capable of giving a clean and stable government.
Singh also came down heavily on the BJP calling it an opportunist and power hungry party. ``They cobbled up an alliance when they had no clear mandate of the people,'' he added.
