Balaji claims selection chess

MUMBAI, MAY 10: G Balaji, a first year commerce student won the pre-rating Selection Chess Tournament with 8.5 points in the Bombay Chess Association-organised event. Ganesh Bhilare, who led in the initial rounds of the tournament, finished second with 7.5 points.

Balaji defeated Anirudha Sanzgiri in the last round, while Bhilare drew with Kiran Kamble. The eighth standard student of Fr. Agnel school, Vashi, Vaibhav Saxena was third with 7 points.

Final positions: 1. G Balaji 8.5 points; 2. Ganesh Bhilare 7.5; 3-4. Vaibhav Saxena, Amol Wagle 7; 5-7. Rajan Rajadhayakshya, Kiran Kamble, Abhijit Bhurke 6.5; 8-12. DB Pulekar, Anant Iyer, Raj Parakh, Vakil Akhtar, Prakash Patole 6.

Anand Bharti tops

Sri Anand Bharti Samaj Sangh bt Royal Cricket Club by four wickets in the final of the 14th Dr Sridhar Deshpande Memorial cricket tournament, conducted by Sporting Clubs' Committee in its Platinium Jubilee year at the Central maidan, Thane, yesterday.
