Torture in custody: DCP told to institute probe

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, May 14: A city court today directed Crime Branch Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) to institute a probe into the alleged torture of a person by a sub-inspector of Mukherjee Nagar Police Station four days ago.

Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) R.K. Gauba ordered him to ``depute an officer not below the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) to supervise the investigation''.

The CMM's order came in the wake of an application filed by Vimal Banson alleging that he had been tortured in the Mukherjee Nagar Police Station by Sub-Inspector Mahavir Singh on May 10.

Medical examination by doctors of Hindu Rao Hospital has confirmed that the man had received injuries on his hip and genitals. In his application, Banson had said he was called by Mahavir Singh in connection with another case. When he reached the Mukherjee Nagar Police Station, he was made to take off his clothes, forced to lie down and given blows with a cane on his hips, feet and fists and other parts of his body, Banson alleged.

He was reportedly threatened before he was released. Earlier, the Mukherjee Nagar SHO, who was directed to file a report on the matter, confirmed that the victim had been called by Mahavir Singh for interrogation, but denied the use of any third degree treatment.
