ROME, May 14: One of the most exciting Italian title races in years has come down to the wire with AC Milan favoured to win despite trailing leaders Lazio by one point with two matches left.Lazio, who won their only title in 1974, can be masters of their own destiny by winning their two final games but face a decidedly tougher schedule than Milan.
Lazio travel to Fiorentina tomorrow, who must win to book a spot in next season's Champions League. They then face Mallorca in the European Cup Winners Cup final next week before hosting Uefa Cup winners Parma in their last league match.
``In nine days, from next Saturday in Florence to the Cup final in Birmingham to our last match with Parma, our entire season will be at stake,'' Lazio's Swedish coach Sven Goran Eriksson said.
``Each match will be a final for us and by winning them,we can make this a fairy-tale season,'' he added.
Milan, for whom this was supposed to be a transition year after two disastrous seasons, have a much easier calendar.
OnSaturday, they host bottom club Empoli, who are already relegated, and travel to relegation-threatened Perugia for the last game on May 23.
The difference in schedules led Milan managing director Adriano Galliani to say last week that his club would win the title if they could beat Juventus on Sunday. Milan won 2-0 with both goals by Liberia's George Weah.
``We have surprised everyone. Who would have thought, just few months ago, that we would fight for the title until the very end?'' Weah said.
``This team can win it all. If we played against the rest of the world right now, we would win hands down,'' the former world player of the year said.
Milan also enjoy the advantage of experience. Several current players were part of the side that dominated from 1988 to 1996 when Milan won five titles, three European Cups and one Intercontinental Cup.
``Lazio must feel more pressure than we do right now,'' he added. Lazio, however, have history on their side.
The Serie A title race has come down to twoteams separate by one point in the final two weeks 11 other times since 1935, but only once (Juventus in 1973) have the trailing team cut the gap to win the Championship.
``It is true that Milan have more experience than we do and are used to living at moments like this,'' Lazio chairman Sergi Cragnotti said.
``But we have shown all season long that we are the better side, and we will show it again in our last two matches, even if the Florence game will be a nail-biter in every sense of the word,'' he added.
