Accidents must be promptly reported

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, MAY 17: District Collector and Chairperson of the Disaster Management Plan (DMP) committee Sangeeta Singh has directed owners of workshops and industrial units in the city to immediately inform the departments concerned and the control room of any accident in their respective units, so that people's safety can be assured.

The collector said this while chairing a disaster management plan meeting at the collectorate. Citing examples of methods being used by Vadodara based IPCL and other industries in Bharuch and Ankleshwar, Singh said that if required, wireless sets and devices to track wind direction could also be put to use round the clock.

The collector also asked industry owners from units in Sachin, Pandesara, Hazira and other areas to remain in constant touch with the departments concerned to ensure no water-logging took place at their units during the monsoons.

Also speaking during the meeting, city Police Commissioner Kuldip Sharma stressed the need for industrialists to be more responsible and co-ordinate better with authorities to avoid disasters. He asked the industrialists to prepare a list of all workers in their units with their addresses and provide them identification cards at the earliest. DSP V M Pargi also asked industrialists to provide adequate transportation facilities especially in times of crises.

District Development Officer (DDO) B N Joshi suggested that drivers and cleaners of tankers carrying hazardous chemicals should be informed of the contents so that they can take precautions. Senior factories inspector K U Mistry directed units owners to furnish all required and updated information about their units within a week, including information of schools, hospitals, population, markets, etc within five kilometres of their units.
