After arguments, women torched

PUNE, MAY 17: Two women were allegedly burnt to death by their husbands within 24 hours in two separate incidents in the city.

While Sangeeta Kashinath Gunjal, a resident of Nagpur Chawl opposite Yerawada Jail, was allegedly burnt by her husband Kashinath Anantrao Gunjal on Saturday afternoon, Yashoda Chandrakant Walke succumbed to her burns on Monday.

In Sangeeta's case, police say an argument over Kashinath's drinking habits led to the gruesome incident. On Saturday afternoon, an inebriated Kashinath had an argument with his wife. He soon lost his temper and started beating her. As things worsened, he grabbed a can of kerosene, poured its contents on her and set her afire.

She was rushed to Sassoon hospital with 90 percent burns. A case of attempted murder was filed with the Yerawada police. Kashinath was arrested on Saturday evening.

In the second incident which took place on Sunday evening, Chandrakant Kondiba Walke of Dighe village allegedly set his wife on fire. According to the police, Chandrakant and his wife Yashoda had an argument over their meagre savings. Chandrakant had received his salary a day earlier and his wife wanted him to put the money in the bank. On Sunday, a sozzled Chandrakant had an argument with this wife and then allegedly set her ablaze. He immediately fled the scene, the police said. Yashoda was rushed to Sassoon hospital. After battling for 20 hours, she succumbed to her injuries this afternoon. Chandrakant was arrested by the Vishrantwadi police.
