MSU gives nod to private colleges

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, May 23: The M S University has finally given No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to two institutes, the Baroda Productivity Council and the KARM, Mumbai for setting up colleges to start degree courses.

While these institutes would be affiliated to the Gujarat University (GU) and would start a Masters and Bachelors course in business administration, it would now be the responsibility of the Gujarat University to fix other criteria.

The M S University Syndicate comes into the picture because as per the act of the university, any college coming up within the premises of the MSU would have to first seek its permission.

For granting an affiliation, the Syndicate has to see to it that the people approaching the university for starting colleges are genuine, have good credentials and the capability to manage academic institutes apart from providing adequate infrastructural facilities like in other professional colleges in the State.

While the students studying in these colleges would be awarded degrees by the Gujarat University -- who would also decide the syllabus -- admissions to the colleges would consist of an entrance examination, like in other professional colleges.

The affiliations were sanctioned by the M S University Syndicate during its special meeting held on Friday. While members were divided over the issue, some contested that the university should first see to it that these colleges grant affiliation to courses in Commerce, Arts and Science which was more important.

Syndicate member Shirish Kulkarni said, ``Streams like Arts and Commerce are already full and need affiliation before the professional courses are given.''

But members who supported the cause of affiliation contended that only if the university started granting No Objection Certificate to start professional colleges, would others come up to start courses in Commerce, Science and Arts.
