Training needed for IT professionals

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, May 23: Experts stressed the need to impart technological expertise to those in the field of library and information at a two-week workshop on `Computer and Software in Library and Information Activities' which began here on Sunday. The workshop has been organised jointly by the Vadodara Association of Libraries and Information Centre and the Indian Library Association (ILA).

Speaking on the occasion, president of the Vadodara Association of Libraries and Information Centre (VALIC) Anil Tataria said it was time that those in the profession be trained on information network.

Pro vice-chancellor of M S University Deepak Kumar De said, ``It is high time to redefine the job content of a present day librarian.'' Stating that library and information professionals have to gear up and equip themselves with the latest developments in the field, he observed that professionals in this field have to work harder than those of other nations or else the gap between developed and developing nations would widen.

Meanwhile, praising the efforts of ILA and VALIC, C R Patel, the first librarian of S P University said such training programmes would go a long way in equipping the professionals. He said such programmes would also help those who were new in the profession.

Among others, H C Mehta, retired librarian of BITS Pilani and K H Shukla, vice-president of ILA were present.
