WASHINGTON, MAY 26: The Clinton administration is concerned that a US Congressional report accusing neighbouring China of stealing American nuclear weapons secrets may spark off a new arms race between India and China.``The (Congressional) report will be looked at very closely in India to see what implications that report has for security concerns,'' Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs Karl Inderfurth admitted to a Senate foreign relations subcommittee.
``We would not want to see a competition between India and China in terms of their nuclear programmes,'' he said.
``I would be deeply concerned by this breach of technology by a large country that sits on my border with whom I've had difficulty with in the past,'' said Senator Sam Brownback, who chairs the foreign relations panel.
Inderfurth said he hoped that the Cox report would not spark another game of one-upmanship.
``We hope that (India and China)...will address their concerns directly,'' Inderfurth said. ``That is the onlyway those security issues can be fundamentally resolved.''
