Mishap claims former civic chief, wife, son

KOLHAPUR, May 26: Former civic chief and sitting corporator of Jaysingpur, Anil Magdum, his wife Ujwala and five-year-old son Abhijit were killed along with an aide and the driver in a road accident near Jahirabad in Andhra Pradesh last night.

The Magdums were on their way to Hyderabad and the temple town of Tirupati.

Jaysingpur mourned the demise of its former first citizen today by observing a total bandh while the council postponed inauguration of the Civic President Cup Kabaddi Tournaments scheduled for this morning.

The mortal remains of Magdums and Tukaram Hazare (27) working with Pharmacy College of Magdums' educational institute and driver of the Tata Sumo Jaykumar Chougule will be brought to Jaysingpur on Thursday morning, it was stated.

The Magdums' jeep (MH 05 -682) collided with a truck killing all five on the spot, according to available information. The bodies were identified from the visiting cards and other articles recovered from the ill-feted vehicle. The brothers of the deceased, Dr Sukumar and Vijay Magdum, left to claim the bodies early this morning. Anil alias Pintu Magdum was first elected to Jaysingpur Municipal Council in 1991 and later in 1997. His wife Ujwala was also elected to the municipal council while Anil got his second term. He later became president of the municipal council for a six months term from May 6 to October 7, 1997. Magdum accorded priority to outstanding power bills at the water supply department, civic chief Shivaji KumbharKumbhar said.

Kumbhar, corporators Sulochana Vibhute and Kadambari Popalkar, Kolhapur district kabaddi association president H D Baba Patil, local vegetable market sangh leaders Vishnu Lamdade and Datta Rajput paid tributes to the Magdums.
