Cricket fans turn to reiki for Indian victory

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
AHMEDNAGAR, May 26: Affected by the nationwide cricket fever, some cricket fans at Shrirampur have sent reiki to the members of the Indian cricket team in England to ensure India's success at the world cup cricket match.

However the local superstition eradication committee has criticised the move by the cricket fans, saying that sending reiki was a kind of sophisticated superstition.

Reiki, a method of healing started by a Japanese, has gained popularity in the town during the last two years. Many classes have been conducted at Shrirampur to provide training in reiki to interested people. Some Pune-based reiki masters visit Shrirampur to conduct these classes. A large number of persons, including some medical practitioners as well as politicians, have attended these training classes. Some of them have even attended advanced reiki classes.

The reiki masters claim that reiki is a therapy which can be used to cure patients suffering from various diseases. Reiki masters also claim that reiki helps to boost self-confidence. Those who have attended the reiki training classes have also claimed that reiki also helps one to obtain mental peace. Some women even send reiki to their husbands who are out of station to ensure success in their mission.

Recently some cricket fans decided to employ the use of reiki to ensure the victory of the Indian team in the most prestigious world cup match. Many of them were disappointed that despite sending reiki, the Indian team lost two matches. In fact, after the two defeats, reiki had even become a subject matter of ridicule. Undeterred by the criticism, some of those trained in reiki on Sunday sent reiki to India's ace cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. Their happiness knew no bounds when Sachin recorded a century and brought victory to the country. They claim that it was the reiki which helped Sachin to overcome the grief caused by the demise of his father and make wonders in the crucial match.

The leaders of the superstition eradication committee do not share their view. Labelling reiki as a recent fad among the richer classes, they say this sophisticated superstition is harmful as it makes people dependent on some mythical powers.
