US publishing house to hold book fairs for children in Mumbai
EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
Mumbai, May 26: Books, and therefore, reading may well get some breathing space in a city where children are drawn by cricket, pool and other forms of entertainment. Scholastic India (Pvt) Limited, a publishing house, has organised four book fairs in the city and Navi Mumbai exclusively for children and their teachers. The US-based publishing house is considered to be the world's largest distributor of children's books and other reading and learning materials in English. Its one-and-a-half-year old India chapter has worked in 40 other Indian cities, but the book fairs in the city are being organised for the first time. ``We have realised that even in the US, school text books are very often inadequate, that they need a supplementary system of learning which at the same time would be attractive. That is primarily why our books are not just entertainers but teachers as well,'' Arundhati Deosthale, editor, Scholastic India Pvt Ltd told Express Newsline. The first leg of the fair will be inaugurated atthe Y B Chavan Centre on June 8, and will be held there till June 13. Then, the fair will shift to Shivaji Park's Veer Savarkar Smarak from June 16 to 20, and then to Utkarsha Mandal, Vile Parle, from June 23 to 27. Vashi's Mahatma Phule Bhavan will host the fair between June 30 and July 4. The timings of the fair at all venues are between 11 am and 8 pm. Copyright © 1999 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
