MUMBAI, June 6: Contractors defaulting on desilting of drains have been fined Rs 1.4 lakh by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Deputy Municipal Commissioner N B Achrekar said they have been fined for reasons ranging from sub-standard work to delays. However, unlike last year when three contractors were blacklisted, none of them has been blacklisted this time.While Rs 75,000 has been recovered from contractors in the western suburbs, Rs 35,000 each has been recovered from the eastern suburbs and the city this year. The defaulters include Chinar Construction (Rs 15,000), Neera Enterprises (Rs 5,000), D K Enterprises (Rs 10,000) and Pratap Constructions (Rs 5000).
Meanwhile, desilting work, which the mayor had promised would be complete by the end of May, will continue till June 20. Achrekar said just over half the work has been completed in the western suburbs, 74 per cent in the city and 80 per cent in the eastern suburbs.
