Fact-finding panel appointed

The Press Council of India has appointed a fact finding committee to probe assault and attacks on journalists, newspaper owners, newspaper establishments, newspapers printing press and their owners, newspaper vendors as well as incidents of obstruction to the distribution of newspapers.

The committee comprises Justice P B Sawant, chairperson, Press Council of India, O P Sharma, advocate and former chairperson of the Bar Council of India and member of the PCI and M D Gangwar, senior journalist and PCI member. The committee will probe all such incidents which have taken place since January 1, 1997 and submit its report to the Press Council.

Government appointments

The state government has appointed Chandrakant Salunke, representative of World Marathi Chambers of Commerce and Industries (Mumbai) and B C Bhartiya,representative of Nag Vidarbh Chambers of Commerce (Nagpur) as additional members on the State Level Tax Advisory Committee.

Colonel B D Deshmukh (retired) has been appointed as Director, Ex-Servicemen's Welfare Department, Pune. His appointment will be equivalent to the Deputy Secretary of Mantralaya.

Digestive centre at Bhatia

The Digestive Disease Centre at the Bhatia General Hospital, Tardeo has installed a cancer detection machine called Endoscopic Ultrasonography (EUS). The centre is also equipped with endoscopes and endoscopic ultrasonography machines for cancer detection. Call on 3064350/3071297.

Classes in Urdu, Hindi

Hindustani Prachar Sabha will conduct free Hindi and Urdu classes from June 1 from 5.30 pm to 6.30 pm. These classes will be held twice a week. For further details, contact the Director, Hindustani Prachar Sabha, Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Building, 7, Netaji Subhash Road; call on 2812871 or 2810126.

Workshop on stress, time

Aavishkar Clinic is conductinga two-day workshop on `Managing Stress and Time' on June 12 and 13 at Matheran. The workshop, conducted by psychiatrist Dr Nirmala S Rao and her team, will focus on causes, symptoms and stages of stress awareness. Call on 4227515.

Youth camp on secularism

The Centre for Study of Society and Secularism is organising a youth camp on `Secular Values and Communal Problems' on June 8 and 9 at J J Nursing Association, Aksa Beach, Malad (W) from 10 am to 5.30 pm.
