Will look into matter of direct purchase -- Badal assures aarhtias

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PATIALA, JUNE 6: Punjab Chief Minister Parkah Singh Badal has assured a deputation of the Punjab Arhtiya Association that the state government will look into the matter of direct purchase and do its best to give proper relief to the aarhtiyas in the state. The deputation was led by Jagtar Singh Talwandi and Ranjit Singh, chairman of Punjab Tubewell Corporation.

Other members of the deputation included Bal Krishan Singla, president of the Federation of Aarhtiyas Associations of Punjab, Federation secretaries Swaran Singh and Harbans Bansal, Federation vice-president Pandit Ram Sarup Sharma, Charan Singh, Neghar, member of the executive committee of the Federation, and Surjit Singh, Ajit Singh Sihal, Madan Lal, Vijay Jhangi, Subhash Banga and Rakesh Singla, all members of the Federation.

During their meeting with the Chief Minister, the deputation detailed out the drawbacks of direct purchase which is likely to cause unemployment among the arhtiyas and also allow exploitation of the farmers and evasion of government revenue. Bal Krishan Singla, president of the Federation of Arhtiyas Associations of Punjab, claimed that during the meeting, the Chief Minister asked the Finance Commissioner (Development) how such a notification was issued if it could lead to a loss of revenue for the government. He said Finance Minister Kanwaljit Singh, who was also present in the meeting, rejected the direct purchase system and said the interest of farmers could not be protected without the institution of the arhtiyas in the state.

The Chief Minister has called another meeting with the arhtiyas to discuss the issues of increase of commission on the remaining items and allotment of plots to the arhtiyas. The date for the proposed meeting is yet to be finalised.
