Neither country can afford a war - Rahul Bajaj

The intrusion into Kargil is as much an act of aggression as an intrusion into Kohima, Kutch and Kanyakumari. Remote as they may be, these distant mountain heights like Kargil, Drass, Batalik and Mushkoh are integral parts of our motherland.

We do not seek a war. Nor can the two developing but nuclear States afford it. Our peace-loving nature, however, should not be taken as a sign of weakness. It appears that Pakistan decided on this fool-hardy step as a last resort to alter the LoC and to once again invite international attention to the Kashmir problem, leading to third party mediation.

But our neighbour's gamble has backfired. The world, including the United States, has recognised that Pakistan has been an intruder and, hence, must ensure that the intruders withdraw to the Pakistani side of the LoC. Our case is so strong that even the best diplomatic efforts of Pakistan have not helped them turn world opinion in their favour.

Our soldiers and airmen are fighting in an extremely difficult andinhospitable terrain, while pushing back the intruders. At a time like this, the entire country, including all the opposition parties, stand behind and support our armed forces and the government. We are a diverse country and have our many differences. However, history has clearly shown that in times of such a crisis, the nation stands as one.

I sincerely hope that wiser counsel will prevail and those supporting the intruders will realise the folly of continuing, leave alone escalating, the conflict. We do not want to cross into anyone else's territory. We shall, however, certainly ensure that no one crosses into ours.
