Jail kids may get a taste of life outside

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
VADODARA, June 8: While much has been said and something of late has been done for the welfare of men and women prisoners, little attention has been paid to children living with their mothers in jails.

However, under a plan chalked out by the Jail Advisory Committee on Tuesday, all seven children living in the Baroda Central Jail will be allowed to go to gardens and other picnic places in the presence of social defence office.

According to an official spokesman, till now children were not sent out primarily because of their mothers' reservations and also because of absence an official agencies' involvement.

The children, all under four-years of age, will now be taken out for play and fun by the district collectorate's Social Defence Wing even as plans are afoot to seek official permission for taking their mothers out in case the children are uncomfortable without them. They would also be given toys and other games.

The meeting was chaired by District Collector Anil Mukim, District and Session Judge R M Parmar, Vadodara Jail superintendent Ramniwas Meena, Social Defence Officer Priyamvada Trivedi, besides some officials of the road and building department.

Mukim was apprised of inadequate amenities, including urinals and bathrooms, besides lack of space in the jail. According to official information, there are 124 women prisoners against its capacity of 54, 1287 men prisoners against the capacity of 795. While Mukim instructed the PWD officials to do the needful so as to comfortably accommodate all the inmates, Meena informed him that repairs of bathrooms, urinals and dormitory were underway and would be completed before the monsoons.
