BANGALORE, June 13: At least five people were killed and 40 houses damaged as torrential rain lashed the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Uttar Kannada in Karnataka during the last few days.According to reports received here, the two districts were badly affected. However, the situation was improving as there was a let-up in the downpour on Sunday.
According to delayed reports, three people were washed away when the Sharad tank in Uttara Kannada overflowed on Friday last. Fourteen cattle heads were also washed away.
The police said two more deaths were reported in Uttara Kannada district. A woman was killed when a boulder from the adjoining hill fell on her house on Saturday. In another incident, a man was washed away in flash floods in Karki.
At least 40 houses were damaged. Most of the rivers and tanks in the two districts were full.
Meanwhile, a Shimoga report said there have been heavy rains in the catchment areas of the river Sharavathy. The level in the Lingamakki reservoir, thesource of major hydel generation in the State, was raising.
