NAGPUR, JUNE 13: The Maharashtra State Dam-displaced Farmers Rehabilitation Samiti has demanded formation of a rehabilitation authority for the Gosikhurd dam so as to bring about better coordination among various Government departments associated with the dam work and speed up the rehabilitation process.General Secretary of the Samiti Baba Adhao made this demand at a press conference held on Saturday in which the Samiti highlighted the delays caused by the State Government in providing relief to the dam-hit. The Samiti while urging the State Government to take immediate steps towards the rehabilitation, has threatened to intensify its ongoing stir if the dam-hit farmers were not accorded their legitimate rights.
The Samiti has suggested certain steps which would help in proper rehabilitation of the displaced persons. It includes amendment of the Rehabilitation Act to include provision for formation of an authority, quarterly inspection of the rehabilitation work by elected representatives, publishing awhite paper, employment allowance to the dam-hit till the rehabilitation benefits are accorded, Government jobs to youth, etc.
Adhao categorically said that the Samiti was not opposed to the dam and the development of the region. What it is opposed to is the apathetic approach of the State Government towards rehabilitation. It is this reason that besides Gosikhurd several other places including those in western Maharashtra are witnessing people's agitation for proper rehabilitation.
Agitations have been launched at Urmodi, Wang, Marathwadi, Neeradeodhar, Gunjwani, Kukdi and Pavana in the western Maharashtra, Adhao informed. The Samiti was also opposed to the announcement for holding a janata durbar of the persons displaced by the Gosikhurd dam on June 19 and 20 in the city, made by Guardian Minister Nitin Gadkari. Instead, the durbar should be held at the very place from where people have been displaced, Adhao demanded.
Noted social worker Rupa Kulkarni and Samiti worker Vilas Bhongade were alsopresent.
