Call for Daman relief fund

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, June 13: The Daman and Diu Congress Committee President Aslam Khan has, in a written representation, asked the union territory's administration to set up a `Permanent Relief Fund' for the territory to meet contingencies arising out of natural calamities so that immediate succour could be provided to victims.

Khan pointed out in his representation that following the recent cyclone in the area when many fishermen lost their lives, the territory Administrator had to raise relief funds through private bodies.

He also brought to the Administrator's notice the fact that petrol pumps in Daman were allegedly supplying petrol mixed with kerosene, and urged the Administrator to conduct surprise checks to ensure petrol quality.

The Congress Committee requested the Administrator to look into the poor maintenance of village roads and to expedite the laying of water pipelines so that people in rural areas get drinking water.
