CPM gets into election mode

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MALAPPURAM, June 13:Communist Party of India (Marxist) politburo member Prakash Karat has said that the party committees of the concerned states have been entrusted to bring secular forces behind the Marxist party to rally against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies in the forthcoming general elections.

Addressing a meet-the-press programme organised by Malappuram Press Club here on Sunday, the CPM leader said his party would chalk out the election strategy at the politburo meeting to be held on June 15 and 16.

Karat said the party leaders had met G K Moopanar and AIADMK supremo J Jayalalitha in Tamil Nadu, Janata Dal leaders in Karnataka and the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) leaders in Assam as part of the effort for building a third alternative against the Congress and the BJP.

Justifying his party's overtures towards the AIADMK, Karat said this was done taking in view of the new political situation in Tamil Nadu. "Our aim is to defeat the DMK-BJP combine there," he added.

The politburomember said his party was against the minorities organising themselves for fighting the fascist forces. The growth of minority communalism would only help majority communalism, he added.

Asked about his party's view of the Muslim League in the changed political scenario, he said the CPM had not changed its policy on league.
