Australians too hot for rivals

BRISBANE, JUNE 13: Australia's Olympic and World champion women's team survived a stiff test from Argentina before posting a 4-2 win in the Champions Trophy Hockey tournament today.

It was the Australians' third straight victory.

In the men's competition, Australian captain Michael York led a defence which held the world's best strikers scoreless as the home side beat Spain 2-0, while South Korea drew 2-2 with Pakistan.

Australian Craig Victory collected his second goal of the tournament in only his fourth international match when he scored just before half-time.

Teammate Troy Elder added the second in the first minute of the second-half, while full-backs York and Jason Duff produced powerful display to deny their highly-rated rivals.

In the Australia-Argentina women's match, forward Claire Mitchell-Taverner scored their first goal in the sixth minute with striker Alyson Annan adding a second from a penalty six minutes later.

But Argentine mid-fielder Marie Rognoni, who earlier suffered a stingingshoulder blow while stopping a goal attempt, opened her country's account four minutes later before Australia took a 3-1 lead through Nikki Mott.Although Argentina reduced the margin to 3-2 through striker Agustina Garcia in the 47th minute, the home side sealed victory with a goal from penalty corner specialist Bianca Langham after 54 minutes.

Australia have scored 15 goals in just three games after earlier strong wins over New Zealand and Germany. In another women's match today, the Netherlands beat New Zealand 2-1 for their third win of the series.

But Dutch captain Carole Thate, who scored her country's opening goal in the 33rd minute to level the match at 1-1, was knocked out in the closing stages of a bruising encounter.

New Zealand succumbed after the Dutch landed a penalty stroke by striker Ageeth Boomgaardt midway through the second half.

Results

Men: Australia bt Spain 2-0; South Korea drew with Pakisan 2-2.

Women: Australia bt Argentina 4-2; The Netherlands bt New Zealand 2-1.
