Signatory to the LoC debunks Pak claim

Shailendra Paranjape
MUMBAI/PUNE, JUNE 21: Maj Gen (retd) M R Rajwade, one of the signatories to the document on the demarcation of the actual Line of Control (LoC) after the 1971 Indo-Pak war, has ridiculed Pakistan Foreign Minister Sartaz Aziz's claim that the actual LoC was never finalised.

According to Maj Gen Rajwade, now residing in Pune, the actual LoC was finalised after going through minute details and only then did representatives of India and Pakistan sign the document.

After the war, both countries had appointed independent groups to finalise the actual LoC. At that time, Lt Gen P S Bhagat, a Victoria Cross recipient, was the leader of the Indian team while Maj Gen Rajwade was the deputy chief. The Pakistan side was led by Lt Gen Abdul Hamid Khan while Brig Sadiq Abbasi was his deputy.

Maj Gen Rajwade said that the actual LoC was decided after visiting the infantry at their respective actual sites. He said that the document about the actual LoC was signed by both parties only after they agreed unambiguously tothe contents of the document.

``It is now ridiculous on the part of Pakistan to maintain that the actual Line of Control was never finalised,'' said Maj Gen Rajwade.

Recalling the procedure of finalising the actual LoC, he said that the work to determine the LoC had continued for six to seven months. For this purpose, in-depth surveys were conducted to determine the sites.

Besides, joint meetings of teams from the two countries were convened every month to ascertain unanimity with regard to the actual LoC in the respective areas.

The joint teams had experts from the Military Survey of India and Military Survey of Pakistan. The survey was conducted in a very scientific manner and involved the use of various equipment.

Maj Gen Rajwade, decorated with the Military Cross for his role in the Burma campaign during World War II, was Chief of Staff of 15 Corps in Jammu and Kashmir in 1971. He was appointed Chief of Staff of the Northern Command which was formed at the end of the war.
