VADODARA, June 21: Heavy rains claimed two lives in Ahmedabad and Sabarkantha over the weekend, even as Vadodara district farmers welcomed the downpour, maintaining that it would be beneficial for their crops.Almost all the talukas of the district received rain on Monday. In the 24 hours ending at 5.30 a.m., Shinor taluka recorded 23 mm of rains; Sankheda 21 mm; Karjan 19 mm; Naswadi 11 mm; Padra 7 mm; Dabhoi, Chhotaudepur, Vadodara rural and Savli 5 mm each; Waghodia and Kwant 2 mm each.
Meanwhile, according to sources, various crops, specially sugarcane had been benefitted by the rain. The land would also be richer for the sowing of cotton and other crops in July and August.
Ahmedabad, which experienced heavy rains on Monday, had its first casualty in 30-year-old Surjitsinh Rajput, who slipped on a slippery staircase and died. On Saturday, Sangitaben Kantibhai of Sabarkantha died after she was struck by lightning.
