SURAT, June 21: Most parts of South Gujarat including Surat city received rainfall for the third consecutive day on Monday as the monsoon firmly set in the region. Apart from a couple of incidents of trees being uprooted, there was no damage in the city because of the heavy rains. The met office, while predicting more rains in the region during the next 48 hours, said that the city received about 8 mm of rainfall between 8 am and 5 pm. The sky remained overcast throughout the day during which the city received short intensive showers at regular intervals. Rains and thunder showers are likely in the city and most parts of the region along with high velocity winds in the coastal areas, it added.
The first genuine monsoon showers had people looking for raincoats and plastic sheets, whose vendors sprung up overnight on the Ring Road, Rajmarg and other streets. A number of people were seen buying rain covers, raincoats, gum boots, umbrellas and other materials used for protection from the rain.
