SANGRUR, June 21: Hosts Sangrur entered the men's and women's semi-finals of the Punjab Inter-District Badminton Tournament. In the quarter-final matches in both sections, Sangrur defeated Amritsar by 3-0 and 2-0 respectively.The 3-0 result of the men's quarter-final match was not the true picture. In the first singles was a well-contest affair between Touseef of Sangrur and Varun Gulati of Amritsar. Touseef won the first game 17-14 while Gulati equalised the score by winning the second game at 15-4. Again there was a tough contest in the third game while Touseef won 17-14.
Mohd Salim of Sangrur made it 2-0 for Sangrur as he prevailed over Varun Khanna of Amristar 15-5, 15-6. Sangrur duo of Salim and Touseef just managed to beat a spirited Amritsar pair.
In the women's quarter-final, Shahnaaz of Sangrur won the first game rather easily defeating Saloni of Amritsar 11-2, 11-6. In the doubles Shahnaaz and Shakura of Sangrur got the better of Saloni and Payal of Amritsar 15-13, 13-15, 15-7.
