CHANDIGARH, June 21: Keeping in view the next Olympic Games to be held in Sydney in 2000, the Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) has embarked on an ambitious plan at tap the talent at the grass root level.The IABF is planning to give exposure to the junior and sub-junior players and prepare the team for the International meets. And to start with the IBAF will send a 20-member team, ten each in junior and sub-junior category for training-cum-competition to Germany. According to Rajesh Bhandari, secretary, IABF, the proposal had been cleared by the government and the team will leave for Germany on July 10, for training.
The selected national junior and sub-junior teams will also take part in the Bredenburg Cup to be held at Frankfurt Odeur from July 29 to August 1.
The final ten-member team in the Sub-Junior group will be selected in the Inter-Zonal competition to be held at Delhi on June 27 and 28. Currently, there are four Sub-Junior National camps being held at different venues. The centres are Patiala, Bangalore, Calcutta and Imphal. Each camp has 40 probables and the best ten from each camp will take part in the Delhi meet.
However, in the junior group the camp is in progress at Bangalore. And the final ten-member has already been picked up by the IABF. The secretary, however, refused to disclosed the names.
Two coaches each for both the teams, will also be appointed for the 20-day training-cum-competition tour.
Meanwhile, the eight-member senior team is also currently in Cuba for competition. The members includes Dingko Singh, Asian gold medalists, Gurcharan Singh, Jatinder Kumar and S Suresh.
The next camp in the senior division would commence in July in preparation for the forthcoming SAF Games to be held in Kathmandu in September last. The camp will be conducted in Patiala.
The IABF secretary further disclosed that the contract of the Cuban coach BI Fernandes has been renewed till Sydney Olympics.
