PANCHKULA, JUNE 22: A Vanaspati Van will be developed over an area of 4,945 hectares in Morni Hills of Panchkula district; the Union Ministry of Rural and Child Health has sanctioned Rs 5 crore for the project. The Haryana Forest Department, together with the Union Ministry of Rural and Child Health, has registered a "Vanaspati Van Society" to execute the project which aims to supply herbs for ayurvedic pharmaceuticals.
The project, to be implemented in stages, envisages a plantation of more than 50,000 medicinal species which will also provide green cover to the hills. An area of 2000 hectares will be set aside for medicinal plants already indigenous to the Shivaliks and efforts will be made to protect the plants and enhance their natural regeneration. Herb gardens will be developed over 1000 hectares. The project also includes construction of green houses and nurseries.
The project will benefit the ayurvedic system of medicine by assuring raw materials; it will upgrade village environments and conserve water and soil thereby enhancing agricultural production. The project will generate employment opportunities and promote local cottage industry in ayurvedic medicines. Local people will be trained in manufacture and marketing of ayurvedic preparations. It is hoped that the area will emerge as a commercial centre in the herbal medicine trade.
