Bangalore to have aerospace museum by the end of 2003

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
BANGALORE, JUNE 26: India's first air and space museum will be inaugurated in Bangalore in December 2003. This museum will be the first and only one of its kind in the whole of Asia. The museum will display a variety of aircraft, spacecraft and aviation exhibits, Union Civil Aviation Secretary P V Jayakrishnan said on Friday.

The first meeting of the Aerospace Museum Society, consisting of senior-level professionals and experts of the aerospace community, was heldin Bangalore on Friday to discuss the project.

Experts in various fields such as museum development, architecture and aerospace, would be consulted for design and development of the museum, Jayakrishnan told a press conference.

The museum would be a place to showcase the products and achievements of the internationaland national aerospace community as well as the history of aeronautics and astronautics. The museum is also expected to provide a focal point for the youth to make them aware of the importance of aerospace science and industry, aswell as the career options these fields offer. As of now, awareness of this field among the general public is at a bare minimum. The museum will help the people understand the subject in a proper manner.

Bangalore was the right choice for the location of the museum, as leading aeronautics establishments, such as the National Aeronautical Laboratories (NAL), the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA), were located in the City.

The Indian Air Force, the Air Arm of the Navy, and the Aviation wing of the Army, besides the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), would support the project.Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS) Director Dr K Ramchand has been nominated the President of the Aerospace Museum Society. Air Marshal P Rajkumar too, has been nominated to the society.
