Raids threaten peace, says Lebanon; blames Netanyahu

BEIRUT: Lebanon warned on Friday that Israel's deadly air blitz threatened to derail peace efforts after eight people were killed in what the local media branded a ``new war'' unleashed by the Jewish state.

The Lebanese government he-ld an extraordinary meeting to discuss the Israeli raids -- the heaviest in three years which were in retaliation for rocket attacks on nor-thern Israel by Hezbollah guerrillas that killed two people and wou-nded 12 others. The US, France, the Eu and the UN called for both sides to show restraint, and countries in the region condemned the Israeli attack.

In Jerusalem, the outgoing government of premier Benjamin Netanyahu warned Israel would not hesitate to launch new attacks if the Hezbollah struck again.

``We have a list of potential targets to choose from in Lebanon and will act on the Principle that when we are hit we will hit back at least as hard,'' said Internal Security Minister Avigdor Kahalani.
