China spotlight on `official' Panchen Lama

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
BEIJING, JUNE 27: The Chinese government-appointed nine-year old 11th Panchen Lama has taken control of the religious activities of Tibetan Buddhists in the Himalayan region with the state-run media giving unprecedented coverage to his daily routine.

On his return to Tibet last week, the Panchen Lama, Tibet's second most important religious figure, has urged Tibetan Buddhists to love the ruling communist party and obey the instructions of Chinese president Jiang Zemin, reports said. Observers say the return of the Panchen Lama to Tibet is an attempt by China to undermine the influence of the Dalai Lama.
