Kargil aimed at nullifying Shimla pact -- J.N. Dixit

Pakistan's intrusion in Kargil is a calculated move to nullify the Shimla Agreement and dominate the Kashmir Valley by capturing geo-strategicpositions which will weaken our military capability to defend Jammu & Kashmir against Pakistani aggression.

Pakistan has given a clear message that it is not willing to come to a compromise on the Kashmir issue on the basis of ground realities and the legal accession of the state to India. So, they are trying to revive the political terms of reference of Partition in relation to Jammu & Kashmir. The international community has gone to the maximum extent it could to tell Pakistan to pull back to the LoC. But when you carefully examine the G-8 stand, you will find that they have not supported us on the basic issue of Kashmir. They have not questioned Pakistan's claim on Kashmir, nor have they questioned Pakistan's political stance.

Pakistan over the last 10 years has followed a very calculated dual policy. They keep pretending that they would like a dialogue. Thisgives the impression that they have no aggressive intentions whereas they have been assiduously preparing themselves militarily.

It is time to tell Pakistan that we have attempted normalisation efforts for 50 years and since they haven't responded in the same spirit, we will have to be extremely firm and decisive in our response from now on. There is a price to be paid for this stand and we should have the grit and stamina to pay it. That is the only way nations maintain their unity and strength.
