Another autorickshaw stir likely

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, June 27: Yet another agitation by Surat's auto-rickshaw drivers is on the cards as the meeting between school-rickshaw drivers and the police authorities failed to break the deadlock on Sunday.

School-rickshaw drivers, who are agitating since Thursday, will be joined by representatives of other rickshaw unions when they meet on 2 p.m. on Monday to chalk out an action plan in view of Sunday's failed talks.

A spokesman of the agitating unions told Express Newsline on Sunday night that all rickshaws were likely to go off the road from Tuesday as the police authorities had refused to budge from their tough posture.

The rickshaw drivers met police commissioner Kuldip Sharma and additional police commissioner H P Singh on Sunday to find a solution to the four-day old strike which began when the police cracked down simultaneously on rickshaw drivers near leading schools.

More than 40 vehicles were seized by the police for offences like overloading and non-carriage of permits, among others. The rickshaw drivers, however, alleged that they were being harassed by the traffic police even though some of them had valid permits.

The drivers even tried to rope in Law minister Hemant Chapatwala -- who brokered a compromise once -- and Union Textile Minister Kashiram Rana -- who also contributed his bit once by asking the police commissioner to be practical but did not succeed.

Sharma has maintained that the police will continue to check autorickshaws carrying school children, saying they have been given enough warnings in the past.
