BANGALORE, JUNE 27: A golden goal by skipper Iqbal Singh helped Bengal defeat Tamil Nadu and set up a semi-final clash with Air-India, who ousted Uttar Pradesh 2-1 in the 30th National Junior Hockey Championship here today.They join Bombay and Punjab and Sind Bank (PSB) in the semi-finals. The semi-finals are on Tuesday with Bombay and PSB clashing with each other while the other semis pits today's winner.
Bengal and Tamil Nadu played an attacking game but were unable to score in the stipulated time. Singh struck the golden in the first minute of extra-time. After getting possession of the ball near the 25-yard line, he got past three defenders and caught the rival goalkeeper on the wrong foot as he pushed it in from the right flank.
In the other quarter-final, consistent Air-India were served well by Deepak Thakur, who was a member of the Indian team to Germany and Belgium, used his experience well and combined with Prabhjot Singh to help team sail into the semis.
Thakur scored the first goal in the22nd minute off a pass from Prabhjot Singh. But Uttar Pradesh equalised eight minutes later through Mohd Kaleem. In the 45th, Thakur pushed in the second goal. Uttar Pradesh got three penalty corners in a row but failed to convert.
In the Bengal-Tamil Nadu tie, Tamil Nadu's Gopinath decided to go for an early break in the fifth minute, but missed the target. There were consistent rallies from both the teams which eventually went in vain.
