Jeev stays joint fourth

NEW DELHI: Jeev Milkha Singh could manage only a level-par 72 in the third round but held on to his joint fourth position after the third round at the European Grand Prix golf championship at Hexham, England.

The Indian, who had two rounds of 68 and 69, fell two strokes behind to be seven-strokes off the pace after returning seven-under 209 under windy conditions at the Slaley Hall Course on Saturday.

EB in semis

CALCUTTA: East Bengal stormed into the last four drubbing Eastern Railway 5-0 in a McDowell Cup football Group B exchange. Raman Vijayan struck a brace while Dipankar Roy, Amit Das and Sanjay Majhi scored one goal each.

Four share lead

KALAMASSERY (KOCHI): Four players with three points apiece are in the joint lead after completion of three rounds of play in the 11th Cusat All-India Fide-rated chess championship for Nexus Computers Trophy at the Cochin University campus. Top seed M B Muraleedharan of Kerala, P Harikrishna of Andhra Pradesh, KHaridas of Tamil Nadu and UC Mohanan of Kerala have emerged as joint leaders with full points.

Ex-boxer dead

CALCUTTA: Former joint secretary of Indian Amateur Boxing Federation (IABF) Bhabatosh Deb died at a city nursing home on Saturday after a cardiac failure.

Deb, also a former boxer and ex-secretary of Bengal Amateur Boxing Federation (BABF), was in his fifties. He was a widower and left behind a daughter and a son, BABF sources said.
