Caddick boosts English hopes

ASSOCIATED PRESS
BIRMINGHAM, JULY 2: Andy Caddick`s five-wicket haul brought England dramatically back into contention on the second day of the first cricket Test against New Zealand at Edgbaston.

On a day which saw 21 wickets fall, England, bowled out for 126 and having conceded a lead of 100, struck back by dismissing New Zealand for 107 in the second innings. England were three for the loss of Alec Stewart's wicket when stumps were drawn.

Struggling at 56 for seven at lunch, England limped to 115 due to a 60-run eighth-wicket stand between New Zealand-born Andy Caddick and Alex Tudor. In the first session, the New Zealand four-pronged seam attack blitzed the English top-order.

Chris Cairns and Dion Nash snared three wickets apiece as England's new-look lineup crumbled. But the Kiwis failed to consolidate, and it was left to Simon Doull's belligerent 46 to take them past the 100-mark.
