Sharif flies to US for talks with Clinton

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
Islamabad, July 3: Faced with mounting pressure and increasing isolation from the international community on Kargil, Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif tonight rushed to the United States to hold discussions with President Bill Clinton on the issue.

Sharif is accompanied by its Foreign Minister Sartaj Aziz and Foreign Secretary Shamshad Ahmed, the agency said.

The meeting was proposed apparently when a high-level American delegation led by commander-in-chief of US Central command General Anthony Zinni had visited Islamabad last week to convey a stern message from President Clinton to Sharif.

Pakistan Army Chief General Parvez Musharraf had hinted about a possible Clinton-Sharif meeting last Saturday when he said diplomatic contacts were on to arrange a meeting between the two leaders.

No Pak offer for talks yet

New Delhi: Pakistan is yet to formally convey to India its peace offer to de-escalate tension. An External Affairs Ministryspokesman replied in the negative on being asked whether Pakistani Premier Nawaz Sharif had contacted Prime Minister Vajpayee with a peace proposal in the last 24 hours.
