WGU raises eligibility norm

Mumbai, July 16: After lying low for over a month, the Women Graduates' Union (WGU) hostel, Colaba, is at it again. This time the hostel, run by a charitable trust, has gone for the kill -- within five months it has raised the minimum salary for eligibility from Rs 7,000 to Rs 10,000. Twenty residents who have not yet completed their three years' stay have been served a notice to vacate the premises.

Inmates, who spoke to this paper on condition of anonymity, said that the hostel is also planning to increase its pound of flesh -- from the present 55 per cent to 73 per cent of the women's salary.

Now that the month of June has lapsed, 20 women who were unable to show a hike in their salaries have been asked to leave. According to sources, they met the committee members with a request to consider their case as they had nowhere to go. However, their pleas were turned down.

Women who were lucky enough to continue their stay fear that it will be their turn next after 11 months. ``How many companies giveincrements to their employees every 11 months,'' asks one adding, ``There are several of us here who send money to our folks back home. The hostel's old policy of taking 55 per cent of our salary itself is nothing less than harassment. And now this. Is there no one to give us justice?''

Says another, ``This is nothing less than extortion. The committee has now asked us to pay Rs 5 everytime we forget to sign the register. We want to know what this charitable institution is doing with our money. Even the standard of food and amenities has fallen miserably.''

Inmates complain that most women who stay at the WGU hostel earn incomes of Rs 20,000 and above and show false cerificates. Says one, ``Getting false slips is no big deal. In fact, two years ago when the minimum slab was Rs 3,000, college students were staying here after producing certificates to show that they were working. People like us who genuinely need this place and are showing true salaries are the ones who suffer. If the committee isinterested in providing paying guest accommodation for upper class women it can ask for a fat sum as fees. Why this hypocisy of running a hostel for working women?''
