MUMBAI, July 16: A fact finding mission has concluded that recent attacks by Sainiks on Catholic schools was for their ``personal aggrandizement'' and without any humanitarian objective. The report was presented by EKTA, Voice of the Exploited (VOTE) and Centre for Development Research and Action (CDRA). The Sainiks intended to create fear and make people follow their dictates, the report further says.A member of the team, P R Ram from EKTA, said that the Sainiks attacked only aided schools which charge nominal fees. ``These schools have a good reputation in sports, and over-all extra-curricular activities,'' Ram said. Through interviews conducted over six schools, the team found that of all schools, Catholic ones were under threat as they had received around 70-80 recommendations for admissions from Sena pramukhs.
The report also notes that though the government stopped aid for English-medium schools, the demand for these did not become smaller. The report blames the Shiv Sena for neglectingproblems in admissions though the policy of not giving grants to English-medium schools was taken in 1976. The report says the admissions, which has been growing worse over the years, can be tackled only by opening more schools and improving the standard of existing ones. As of now, Convent schools received application forms three times the number of seats, Ram pointed out.
