CHANDIGARH, July 16: A two-day training workshop on "Computerised Information System in road sector using NICNET" was inaugurated by UT Finance Secretary Rakesh Singh here today. The workshop, the fifth in the series, was attended by representatives from Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab and Chandigarh, besides officers of the Union Ministry of Surface Transport.Rakesh Singh called upon highway engineers to treat the construction of two Super Express ways and create a North-South and East-West corridor, as announced by the Prime Minister for building the same. UT chief engineer R.K. Jain proposed the inclusion of soil data, characteristics of road making material, climatic conditions and monitoring of riding surface in addition to basic data being computerised while using NICNET.
President of the Indian Roads Congress, R.K. Rajoria, interacting with the delegates through video-conferencing from Delhi, stressed on the use of technology to build roads of desired standards to enter the next century and asked the states to utilise contingency provisions of estimates for purchase of computer and software.
The workshop would cover updating and transmission of data, traffic census, information about bridges on NHs, NH inventory system, monitoring system for road and bridge works, basic database management software and command and E-Mail facilities and operations.
The Ministry of Surface Transport and Indian Roads congress had earlier held such training workshops at Bangalore, Gandhinagar, Bhubaneshwar and Shillong.
