PUNE, July 16: The Mumbai-Pune National Highway opened for vehicles this evening - about 55 hours after the vehicular traffic came to a grinding halt due to a snarl caused because of landslides at Adhoshi village, around 70 kms from Pune, in the lower Bor ghat section. The traffic had come to a halt since Wednesday evening. Stranded vehicles had queued up on a 45-km stretch of the highway upto Dehu Road till this evening. The Shapurji and Palanji company as well as the L and T company, which are carrying out the road widening work for the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), had deployed 70 labourers to clear the road for vehicles ever since the landslides took place. Seventy-meter long stretch of the highway was buried under the debris. One lane of the highway was cleared by midnight.
The highway was opened for vehicles around noon. However, the traffic came to a halt again due to a landslide around 1 p.m. on Friday. The debris was removed and the highway was opened for vehicles once again by 2 p.m. The landslides were caused due to the blasting going on to widen the national highway number 4, chief engineer of Public Works Department's Pune Region D B Deshpande told The Indian Express.
