College teachers'stir from July 21

PUNE, July 16: About 40,000 degree college teachers of Maharashtra will go on an indefinite strike from July 21, in response to the call of the Maharashtra Federation of University College Teachers' Organisation (MFUCTO).At a meeting on Wednesday, the Pune University Teachers' Association (PUTA) decided to support the strike one hundred per cent. Harish Desai, chairman of PUTA says that the PUTA will begin canvassing for support among all the city's college teachers through meetings and distribution of circulars. Their long-standing demands include immediate implementation of the recommendations of the Fifth Pay Commission Report and payment of arrears in salaries from January 1, '96, in one installment, as decided by the Central Government.
