PUNE, July 16: The citizens of Pune took the first step on Thursday in reaching out to the families displaced by the incessant shelling in Kargil and Drass sectors in Kashmir.In a unique mission, a group of volunteers of Sarhad - a city-based voluntary organisation, left for Kashmir by the Jhelum Express carrying with them essential commodities worth Rs. 5 lakh meant to suffice at least 500 families for a month. Bharati Mammani, Adik Kadam, Rajendra Pandit, Jaywant Gaikwad, Sunil Mohite, Jyoti Ranade and Pawan Vipradas will carry with them supplies meant for the refugees on behalf of the Rupee Karmachari Nyas, Ruturaj Sahakari Griharachana Sanstha and The Pune Consumer Products Distributors Association. Volunteers will be carrying commodities including utensils, stoves, edible oils, warm blankets, clothing for children, tea packets, salt, toothpaste, notebooks among other things for the refugees. The volunteers will spend at least a fortnight in Kashmir to assist the army in rehabilitation of the refugees.
An informal function was held at the Ruturaj Society where chairman of Rupee Bank Advocate G H Dev felicitated the volunteers of Sarhad. Sanjay Nahar of Sarhad said that this was the first time that civilians have taken such an initiative to provide supplies to their brothers. Speaking on the occasion, Rupee Bank chairman Dev said they would not allow Kashmir to be separated from India.
Ruturaj Society and the Pune Consumer Products Distributors Association have contributed Rs. 50,000 each for the supplies.
