Upsets rule the day

PUNE, July 16: On a day of upsets, unseeded Rohit Umrani defeated fifth seed Karan Kadam in today's match of the junior boys event of the inter-district table tennis championship which is in progress at the Sharda Sports Centre.

The boy from Abhinav Vidyalaya, played a consistent game with a cool mind to clinch the first game 21-16, despite a tough fight put up by Karan. However, once the first was through, he had no problem taking the second at 21-9, in the process clinching the match.

The other upset of the day came through Vivek Kolte who defeated eighth seed Gaurav Rawat 21-13, 21-13, again in the junior boys section. Charged by the momentum created by the other unseeded players, it was next the turn of Shantanu Joshi, who clinched a fluent 21-16, 21-15 over fourth seed Aditya Jog.

Sayali khandekar bt Aboli Deshmukh 21-6, 21-8; Mithila Jogaikar bt Ruhi Sidhaye 9-21, 21-16, 21-15; Trupti Atre bt Gayatri Godbole 21-12, 21-15; Priyanka Tamhankar bt Namita Marathe 21-19, 18-21, 21-17.

St Mary's win
St Marys defeated St Felix 17-5 in their match of the first Coca Cola Cup Inter-school Basketball for the under-12 age group here today.

Aditi Desai was top scorer for the winners with six points, followed closely behind by Hujriya Aderianwala at five points. Rini Abraham, with four, led the tally for St Felix. Meanwhile, in the boy's event, Gaurav Chaubal contributed 12 points towards his team's -- Abhinav -- 36-8 win over SM Choksey. Sohan Tawade and Anish Kembhavi split eight points apiece for the winners, while Jitesh Shah (3) and Punit Shah (2) led the points tally for SM Choksey.

The tournament was inaugurated by H Dastur, president of the Sardar Dastur Schools Trust, while Anita Pandit, principal of Sardar Dastur Girls Schools was the guest-of-honour.
